I have tried about 5 recipes for Baked Sweet Potato (yam) fries and I always enjoy the flavour from the spices. Colleen’s recipe has a great combination of spices, olive oil combined with paprika, dried parsley, garlic powder, lemon pepper, chili powder and salt. We rated this recipe an 8. Can you help me make it a 9 or 10? I can never seem to get any crunch out of my sweet potato fries. My friend Gael told me to make sure they are thin. I have pics below and I think mine are thin. I have been told to soak and dry the yams – I have and it still doesn’t provide any outer crispy layer. I’ve been told to leave the skin on – I did. I’ve been told to broil for the last couple minutes – I did and no luck. What is the secret to crispy sweet potato fries? Even Colleen states not to expect crispy fries. They are soft and delicious. I want crispy and delicious. I only used 1 yam and a portion of the spice mixture. I have heard that potato starch might do the trick but haven’t tried that yet? Can anyone share their secrets to crispy ‘baked’ sweet potato fries? I looked at these pics again and they actually look crispy but they weren’t, unless I take into consideration some of the burnt ends
I just want reiterate – Colleen’s spice mixture for these is quite spectacular, I will use it from now on.

Thanks E! I will cook for you forever! (btw – for those that don’t know, Eliot is my husband) And I stand by my comments – they were soft and delicious and I would like crispy and delicious!

I usually roast my sweet potato oven fries in a glazed porcelain casserole dish and they come out crispy. I also usually cut them into circles vs. the traditional fry shape, though I’m not sure that would make any difference when it comes to crisping up. What temperature did you bake them at? I bake mine at 450 for about 25 to 30 minutes.

Those look pretty delicious. I’m not sure how you would get a good, crispy fry without baking, but I hope you’ll let us know if you come across any fool-proof methods (although, as people are apt to say, nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool).

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the sweet potato fries. I am going to take these suggestions and try them next week and I will report back on what worked the best. I have no problem trying this recipe over and over because my family love sweet potato fries. On a mission!

Hi Aimee,

The secret to crispy baked sweet potato fries…. Potato starch! Mix your fries with oil and spices, then coat with potato starch. No burning, no sogginess, just crispy deliciousness!

I am going to try this, maybe even tonight! I have potato starch in my cupboard, spices in my spice drawer…just a quick trip to get the sweet potatoes…can’t wait!!! Thank you.

I love doing this! When I make them I usually just cut up my sweet potato and drizzle it with olive oil and sprinkle with paprika, cinnamon and salt. Cook ‘em for 20-30 minuntes at 450 and they’re usually pretty perfect! One of my favourite things to make!!

I find if I roast vegetables to get that crispy, outer coating (I love it too), I have cooked away all of the water out of the vegetable, leaving it a little dry inside.

That Two Vegan Sisters link, above, has a method that worked PERFECTLY for me (and I don’t have a convection oven, as she states….I have a crappy apartment-supplied oven!)
